Is Tesla stock a good buy right now?

It depends on the kind of investor you are. A long-term believer in autonomy and robots is weighing whether Robotaxi and Optimus become large businesses, which the latest car and storage figures do not decide. A valuation-focused investor cannot settle it here, because Brighter Finance has no sourced share price, forward price-to-earnings ratio, or market cap on this page. A short-term trader is waiting on Q3 2026 financial results, scheduled after the close on Oct 21, 2026. The bull case, the bear case, and the odds are below.

What's the bull case for Tesla?

The bull case in Brighter Finance's Q2 2026 chart conclusions is that software miles, energy storage, and the charging network are growing even while the auto business is past its peak margin. Optimus is still a stated production target, not a reported unit count.

Robotaxi and FSD

Tesla's FSD business is shifting from simple adoption toward deeper usage, while robotaxi activity remains an early extension of that network rather than its main use. Active FSD subscriptions reached 1.48 million (chart 11), and daily FSD miles per subscriber rose from 10.8 miles to 22.9 miles (chart 17). Cumulative FSD miles increased from approximately 6.4 billion to approximately 12.9 billion (chart 18). By comparison, cumulative paid robotaxi miles reached 2.45 million, while cumulative unsupervised robotaxi miles reached 380,000 (chart 19). The evidence points to two linked changes: the subscriber base is getting larger and each subscriber is using FSD more, which explains the rapid expansion in total miles. Yet the much smaller robotaxi figures show that this broad owner usage has not translated into comparable autonomous commercial service. FSD is therefore functioning primarily as a widely used driver feature, with robotaxi operations still a limited layer of the business.

Optimus

Tesla's Q2 2026 update says first-generation Optimus lines are being installed at Fremont. Tesla's 2026 Q1/Q2 updates disclose no Optimus production count. Tesla's Q2 2026 update says Fremont production is "anticipated later this year".

Energy storage

Storage is no longer just a growing shipment line: it has become a sizable energy business with visible contracted demand and positive economics. Trailing-12-month storage deployed reached about 49,000 MWh in 2026 Q2 (chart 78), while trailing-12-month reported energy revenue reached $12.8 billion (chart 82). The same quarter included about $2.3 billion of deferred revenue and $10.1 billion of unsatisfied performance obligations (chart 84). Energy gross margin was 20.4% (chart 94), with revenue per kWh deployed at $261 versus cost per kWh at about $180 (chart 95). Cumulative energy gross margin reached about $10.0 billion (chart 93). Deployment shows the product is moving at meaningful scale, while revenue shows that scale is being converted into sales. Deferred revenue and unsatisfied obligations add evidence of paid-for or committed work beyond the current quarter, rather than relying only on shipments already completed. The positive gap between revenue and cost per kWh, the 20.4% quarterly margin, and the $10.0 billion cumulative gross margin show that this scale is producing gross profit, not merely volume.

Supercharger network

Tesla has expanded its Supercharger network substantially, but not in proportion to the vehicles it serves. The expansion is increasingly concentrated in larger stations, allowing the stall count to grow without matching the growth in the vehicle base. Stalls rose from about 7,000 in 2017 Q3 to 82,357 in 2026 Q2 (chart 87), while cumulative vehicles per stall increased from about 37 to about 118 (chart 89). In the latest quarter, Tesla added 2,439 stalls (chart 88), yet quarterly vehicles per new stall were about 196, versus about 27 in 2017 Q4 (chart 90). Stalls per station also rose from 7.0 to 9.46 over the same broad period (chart 91). The figures point to a clear trade-off: Tesla is still adding substantial charging capacity, but each new stall now corresponds to a much larger vehicle base. The higher stalls-per-station figure shows that part of this response has come through denser sites, rather than through additions that keep infrastructure proportional to deliveries.

What's the bear case?

The bear case in the same conclusions is a thinner auto profit, a factory system that is not at its old utilisation, and a valuation this page cannot price. Key-person risk is that the same person is chief executive of both Tesla and SpaceX.

Margins

Tesla now produces substantial gross profit with a weaker profit engine: the business has broadened beyond autos, but that broader mix has not restored the margin or profit per vehicle seen at its peak. Total business-line gross profit was about $6.2 billion in Q4 2022 versus $4.9 billion in Q2 2026 (chart 6), while gross margin fell from its 29% peak to 16.8% (chart 20). Auto gross profit per vehicle declined from $15,800 to $6,650 (chart 24), as the selling-price-to-cost gap narrowed from about $16,000 to $6,650 (chart 23). Energy's share of gross profit rose from 4% to 16% (chart 9), and its margin was 20.4% in Q2 2026 (chart 22). These figures point to diversification cushioning weaker auto profitability, not replacing it. The higher Energy contribution and positive Services margin help explain why gross profit remains large, but the lower total margin and profit per car show that the mix has not recovered the earlier level of earnings from each dollar of sales or each vehicle.

Auto demand

Tesla's production system has moved from adding factory capacity to balancing that capacity with demand: deliveries are rising, but factories are still not running at their historical peak utilisation, and inventory has not become excessive. Installed annual manufacturing capacity reached about 2.4 million vehicles in Q2 2026 (chart 31), while factory utilisation was about 73% (chart 32). Quarterly production reached 451,758 vehicles (chart 28), and deliveries increased by approximately 122,000 vehicles in Q2 2026 (chart 34). Global vehicle inventory was 15 days in June 2026, well below its 57.5-day peak (chart 109). These figures point to a system with substantial physical capacity that is not fully used, yet is moving more vehicles to customers without building the large stockpile seen at the inventory peak. Running at about 73% while inventory sits at 15 days against a 57.5-day peak means the extra output is coming from moving vehicles through the system faster, and that the unused quarter of capacity is headroom already built and paid for if demand arrives. The newest operating print is the Tesla IR, Q3 2026 production & deliveries. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in Q3 2026, compared with 480,126 in Q2 2026 and 497,099 in Q3 2025. Production in Q3 2026 was 464,391 vehicles. Brighter Finance does not have a prior-quarter production figure in the same file, so no production comparison is shown. Energy storage deployed was 13.7 GWh in Q3 2026, compared with 13.5 GWh in Q2 2026. Financial results for Q3 2026 are not in the library yet, so this is not a profit comparison.

Valuation

TODO: no sourced share price, forward price-to-earnings ratio, or market cap is available, so this page does not say whether TSLA is expensive.

Key-person risk

Tesla's executives module lists Elon Musk as chief executive since October 2008. SpaceX's leadership module lists him as founder and chief executive. Brighter Finance has no separate score for how much of either stock depends on one person.

TODO: no Thesis and catalysts conclusion is in the Q2 2026 conclusions file.

FSD and Robotaxi

Revenue and mix

Tesla's revenue mix is becoming more diversified in a way that is starting to improve the quality of its business: Services & Other is growing and becoming profitable while regulatory-credit revenue is receding. Services & Other rose to about $4.6 billion in 2026 Q2, while its share of total revenue reached 15.5% (charts 96 and 5). Its gross margin reached 14.1% and cumulative gross margin ended at approximately $1.50 billion (charts 98 and 97). Over the same period, last-twelve-month regulatory-credit revenue fell from about $2.9 billion in 2025 Q1 to $1.49 billion in 2026 Q2 (chart 72), while FSD subscription revenue rose from $238 million in 2024 Q4 to $440 million in 2026 Q2 (chart 75). The point is not simply that Services & Other is larger. Its higher margin and positive cumulative gross margin show that this growing share is now adding profit, while falling credit revenue means the broader mix is relying less on a volatile, externally determined revenue source.

Profit and margins

Production and deliveries

Cash flow and capital

Tesla is profitable and generating substantial operating cash, but its current expansion spending has crossed above that cash, turning free cash flow negative while its property, plant and equipment base expands. This marks a shift from cash generation alone to cash generation being absorbed by a larger investment program. In 2026 Q2, net income was $1.1 billion (chart 52), operating cash flow was $4.7 billion (chart 54), and capital expenditures reached $5.8 billion (chart 59). Capital expenditures exceeded operating cash flow by about $1.1 billion (chart 60), leaving free cash flow at negative $1.1 billion (chart 61). Capital expenditure and R&D together reached about $8.2 billion (chart 65), while property, plant and equipment rose from $41.8 billion in 2023 Q4 to $68.9 billion in 2026 Q2 (chart 67). Profitability and operating cash remain positive, so the negative free cash flow reflects the scale of investment rather than a cash loss from operations. The rising asset base shows that this spending is becoming tangible business infrastructure.

Energy and storage
