Did Bank of America add SpaceX to its US 1 list?

Published . Updated . Is SpaceX Stock A BUY?.

What is the short answer?

Yes. Bank of America Securities added SpaceX to its US 1 list of preferred investment ideas on October 27, 2026. The list is a set of the firm's preferred ideas. It is not a share price, and it is not a financing that has closed. On its October 20 earnings call, SpaceX said its own phone service is targeted for early 2028. Verizon's chief executive said on October 26 that a full ground network would take at least four to six years and, in his estimate, $300 billion to $500 billion. Elon Musk replied that it will take two or three years. That reply is not the early 2028 date on the earnings call. On the same call, Musk said he is highly confident of 10 gigawatts of incremental compute in 2027, or 13 gigawatts in total, and that more than 20 gigawatts of compute next year is a small possibility that used to be zero.

  • Seeking Alpha reported that Bank of America Securities added SpaceX to its US 1 list of preferred investment ideas in an October 27, 2026 research note. Adding the stock to that list is not a share price.

  • TheFly reported the same day that Bank of America analysts added SpaceX and Fox to the firm's US 1 list and removed RenaissanceRe. TheFly describes the list as a collection of the firm's best investment ideas.

  • On Verizon's October 26, 2026 earnings call, chief executive Dan Schulman said a ground network for SpaceX would need 65,000 to 80,000 macro sites and would take a minimum of four to six years to build. He said he assumes the cost is somewhere between $300 billion and $500 billion over the next seven or eight years. He said there is no magic wand and no secret sauce. He also said that, on that timeline, SpaceX would have the possibility of becoming the sixth competitor, not the fourth, and that Verizon already competes against three. Those figures are his estimates. They are not a SpaceX budget.

  • Fierce Network reported that Elon Musk wrote on X on October 26, 2026, "Will take 2 or 3 years," after that Verizon call. That sentence is his timeline. It is not a line in Verizon's transcript, and it is not the early 2028 service date SpaceX gave on its own earnings call.

  • On SpaceX's October 20, 2026 earnings call, president Gwynne Shotwell said the near-term priority is flying the mobile V2 constellation through next year and integrating spectrum purchases to turn on service in early 2028. She said FCC approval to launch 15,000 mobile V2 satellites, and an agreement to acquire a portfolio of low-band spectrum, would pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major mobile carrier in the United States. Early 2028 is the service target in that sentence. The call does not call that service a completed network.

  • Yahoo Finance reported that CTIA, the carriers' trade group, filed a letter with the FCC after meetings with agency officials on October 20, 2026. The report says the letter does not name SpaceX. It says CTIA asked the FCC to keep satellite service off the 2.5 GHz and 3.45 GHz bands. The report says a vote to adopt the related proposal would put that proposal out for public comment.

  • The FCC's agenda for its October 29, 2026 open meeting includes a notice of proposed rulemaking on direct-to-device service in licensed spectrum. The FCC says the rules proposed in that item, if adopted, would make an additional 482 megahertz available for supplemental coverage from space. The agenda is a meeting plan. It is not a grant of spectrum to SpaceX.

  • On the October 20, 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk said he is highly confident of 10 gigawatts of incremental compute in 2027, which he described as 13 gigawatts in total, and that he would be surprised to bring on less than 13 gigawatts by the end of next year. He said the company will aim for an incremental 20 gigawatts of power and cooling so that equipment is not the constraint, and that he is not saying the company will have 20 gigawatts of power. He said more than 20 gigawatts of compute next year is a small possibility that used to be zero and is not zero. He said 20 gigawatts is difficult but not impossible, and that he does not expect everything to go right. Chief financial officer Bret Johnsen said the company ended the quarter with 1.7 gigawatts of nameplate compute, is on track for nearly 2.2 gigawatts at the end of October, and has a line of sight to 2.5 to 3 gigawatts by the end of the quarter. Those figures are statements on the call. They are not 20 gigawatts already online.

  • On that call, Elon Musk said Flight 15 is expected next month and that the plan is to attempt to catch both the booster and the ship. Gwynne Shotwell said they expect the Flight 15 license to include a return to the launch site and a tower catch for both stages. From the date of the call, next month is November. That is an expected attempt. It is not a catch that has already happened.

From the show discussion

These lines restate points from the show discussion. They are not a Brighter Finance forecast, and they are not investment advice.

  • The discussion argued that a place on a bank's list of preferred ideas is not a share price and not a financing that has closed.
  • The discussion argued that a carrier's estimate of four to six years and of $300 billion to $500 billion is that carrier's view of a full ground network, not a company budget.
  • The discussion argued that a two-or-three-year remark is not the same sentence as a company target of early 2028 for its own phone service.
  • The discussion argued that a small possibility of more than 20 gigawatts of compute next year is not capacity already online.
  • The discussion argued that an expected attempt to catch both stages on a later flight is not a catch that has happened.
